How can you not love an eatery that has a placard outside the front door that defiantly boasts: “No Wi Fi. Come in and talk to people.”?
Walk inside the door and another sign greets you: “Drink local.”
In addition to its adorable attitude, there’s a lot to love at Johnny Mac’s, a local dive in Henderson. The restaurant, which opened on Boulder Highway in 1984 (which was 15 years before Steve Wynn opened the Mirage), has the best wings in Las Vegas. Johnny Mac’s owners calculate they have sold over 15 million wings since they opened. They are so large they look like they came from ducks not chickens. The wait staff clearly informs you they never serve frozen wings. They are fried in rice oil to a lacy crispness akin to Japanese tempura. The wings are meaty, juicy and sweet.
You have a choice of either ranch or bleu cheese for dipping. The bleu cheese sauce was so thick you could eat it with a fork; it’s tart tang was a perfect compliment for the wings.
The restaurant has 1/2 price pizzas every Wednesday; crowds spill out the door. The restaurant imports all its mozzarella from Wisconsin and makes its dough fresh daily. The pizza is East Coast style (the owner is from Buffalo) and arrives bubbling and burnished.
The restaurant has a down home, no-pretense feel. And the prices are affordable.
