The Cosmo’s Star Chefs Are Hosting Cooking Classes

May 10, 2016 by Beth Ellyn Rosenthal

The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas has a collection of some of the best restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip, including personal favorites Jaleo Las Vegas, Rose.Rabbit.Lie and Milos. Now the hotel has created a Chef’s series which starts tonight.

Here’s how it works. Each Tuesday one of the hotel’s chefs will teach you how to cook something. Then you get to taste it!

All the classes are at the Whole Foods Market at Town Square, which eXp Realty has its offices above the Apple store. The demo class is from 6:30-7:30 every Tuesday in May.

Tonight’s class will features Luis Montesinos of Jaleo. He will tech us how to create gazpacho and pan com tomate.

Oh, I forgot. These classes are FREE!

Sounds fun! See you there.

Does Your Name Have Anything To Do With Casino Profitability?

May 21, 2014 by Beth Ellyn Rosenthal

Last week Deutsche Bank sold the ueber-cool Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas to the Blackstone Group.

Deutsche Bank foreclosed on the unfinished property in 2008, when everything was falling apart in Las Vegas. Today, despite its reputation as the coolest place on the Strip, the stylish Cosmo has never earned a profit.

Cosmopolitan Hotel, Edsa, Hospitality, Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, pool

The CEO’s name is John Unwin.

In his defense, the selling price was $1.73 billion, 17 times the Cosmo’s 2013 cash flow.

One of the most successful casino operators in Las Vegas is visionary Steve Wynn.

Is it just me or is this a stunning coincidence?

What do you think?

Wine Down on Thursdays at Aureole

April 22, 2014 by Beth Ellyn Rosenthal

Why wait for the week-end? Aureole at Mandalay Bay is inviting locals to meet at the restaurant’s Swan Court patio (the prettiest part of the restaurant) to share $39 bottles of wine.  If this sounds expensive to you, please note this restaurant brags it has a 1961 Chateau Petrus for $4,500. (That’s a down payment on a car for most of us mortals.)

The Swan Court at Charlie Palmer’s Aureole at Manadalay Bay, Las Vegas

Every week the sommelier will select a special bottle Aureole is calling “The Usual Suspects” as the star of #Chasing Thursdays. There will be a different suspect each week, natch. There are plenty of choices since there are 3,200 bottles on the wine list.

In addition, Aureole, which is a Charlie Palmer restaurant, is offering 20 percent off menu items. This is a mitzvah because the food, while spectacular, is spendy.

Here’s a great reason why you should move to Las Vegas if you don’t already live here: you need a Nevada ID to qualify for the discounts. Or you can invite me, because I have one!

Want To Relive 1950’s Cars and Music? Visit the Orleans!

April 14, 2014 by Beth Ellyn Rosenthal

The Orleans is hosting the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender this week-end. The festival, in its 16th year, is dedicated to the 1950s.

The best part is the cars. There will be cars from these movies:

  • The Delorean from Back to the Future
  • The car from Herbie
  • The car from The Beverly Hillbillies
  • The car from Christine

Locals will be participating in a car show. More than 800 have registered so far; all the cars pre-date 1963. None of them have been in the movies.

If you are into music, there will be 65 different artists on six stages, both inside and outside the casino.

Don’t like cars or 1950s music? Then how about:

  • Dance lessons
  • A vintage fashion show
  • Pool party
  • Burlesque entertainment

A four-day pass to the festival is $135. The car show, on April 19, costs $30. These are 2014 prices.

Venetian Owner on the the Forbes Billionaire List

March 11, 2014 by Beth Ellyn Rosenthal

How do you make money in a casino? Las Vegas casino owner Steve Wynn always answered, “Own it.”

His rival Sheldon Adelson, chairman of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, could echo his sentiments. The owner of the Venetian and the Palazzo on the Las Vegas Strip turned up No. 3 on Forbes’s World’s Billionaire list. Adelson, 80, saw his net work grow to $38 billion.

This was the first time he made the Top 10 since 2007. Vegas is coming back!

Steve Wynn himself ranked No. 396 on the list with just $3.8 billion.

Bill Gates was No. 1 on the list.

Just thought you’d like to know.

Super Bowl Weekend Is Super in Vegas

January 26, 2014 by Beth Ellyn Rosenthal

It may snow in New Jersey next Sunday, but I bet it will be gorgeous here in Vegas. (High 60s). So if you can’t get (or afford) a ticket to THE GAME, Vegas is your next best bet.

New Year’s Eve is the biggest weekend here in Sin City. But Super Bowl ranks No. 2. (And we don’t even have a team or stadium!) The Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Bureau estimated that last year more than 311,000 people came to Vegas to watch the Super Bowl. Hotel occupancy was 91.5 percent. (We have 150,000 hotel rooms in Vegas.)

In case you wondered, football fans wagered almost $99 million on the game at one of Nevada’s 183 sports books. David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (yes, there is such a thing!!!!), estimates 85 percent of that money was bet here in Clark County.

So what do you do when you get here? Every casino has its own Super Bowl party. Some are free, others have an admission charge. Or you can head out to a night club. For example, for $100 you can purchase “The First Down” package at Surrender night club at the Wynn Las Vegas. This will buy you a place to stand and watch the game and access to a limited open bar.

Big spenders, on the other hand, can purchase the Hail Mary package at the same club. First, you have to have $35,000. Then you have to have 19 friends who want to join you. (Now that shouldn’t be hard.) This package includes table seating, two dozen Coors Lights, four bottles of liquor of your choice with mixers, and a bottle of Armand de Brignanc champagne.

Check out Vegas.com and VegasChatter.com for links to Super Bowl parties in the city’s bars, lounges and restaurants.

Or you can come to my house. We can search the MLS if you don’t like Bruno Mars.

The Sweetest Grinich is at the Bellagio (let’s hear it for oxymorons!)

December 10, 2013 by Beth Ellyn Rosenthal Leave a Comment

The molten chocolate fountain at Jean Philippe Pastisserie at Bellagio is one of the Las Vegas Strip’s biggest attractions. But at Christmas time the cascading rivers of light, milk and dark chocolate (the largest chocolate fountain in the world according to the Guiness Book of Records) take a backseat to the 5.5-foot tall Grinch. The French candy makers used 50 pounds of chocolate and 112 pounds of rolled fondant to create the confectionery sculpture. His green face doesn’t even look like chocolate.

You can’t take a nibble of the grinch, but you can buy the delicious hand-crafted chocolates and homemade gelato.

The Grinch is located at the shop in the Bellagio. There is a second patisserie at Aria.

Skate Overlooking the Strip at the Cosmo Las Vegas

November 23, 2013 by Beth Ellyn Rosenthal Leave a Comment

Skating at Central Park in New York City is the quintessential way to celebrate the holidays. But hey, this is Vegas. We put a sit-spin on the tradition.

Leave it to the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, whose tagline is, “Just the right amount of wrong,” to spice things up a bit. The resort has turned its fourth floor Boulevard Pool mezzanine into a holiday ice rink with one of the best views of the Strip around.

Then there are the special drinks called “curated cocktails.” Alcoholic beverages includes things like Who’s a Hot Tea?, featuring Earl grey tea and vodka, lemon juice and cardamon-black pepper honey syrup, which will set you back $14. Non-alcoholic drinks include The Misadventures of Peppermint Patty, featuring hot chocolate and peppermint syrup, which only costs $6. Or you can buy a thermos of hot chocolate for $25.

Fire pits surround the pool, so you can roast s’mores.

For those multi-taskers who can skate and watch a movie at the same time, The Cosmo is hosting Date Skate Mondays. The resort will be showing movies on its 65-foot screen. The first movie begins at 7:30 with the second feature commencing at 10 pm. Here is the movie schedule:

November 25: Grumpy Old Men and Planes, Trains & Automobiles

December 2: Polar Express and A Christmas Story

December 9: Home Alone and Christmas Vacation

December 16: Miracle on 24th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life

December 23: Elf and White Christmas

The Cosmo is charging $15 per person for skating, but only $10 for Nevada residents (another major reason for moving here!) Skate rentals are another $5. But if you just want to watch the movies, they are free! (which is my favorite four-letter word.)

The ice opens at 3 pm Mondays-Fridays. You can lace up your skates at noon on the weekends. Everything shuts down at midnight.

Zappos.com and UGGs are sponsors for Date Skate Mondays.

The Iconic MGM Grand Lion Will Soon Be Gone

July 14, 2013 by Beth Ellyn Rosenthal Leave a Comment

A golden lion has guarded the north entrance to the MGM Grand Casino since it opened in December 1993. However, his imposing presence hid the entrance to the casino.

No more! The lion and the facade behind him will soon be gone so people walking on the Strip can peek into the casino. Most Strip resorts have easy pedestrian access, so the MGM Grand is finally following suit 20 years later.

If you want a photo, better visit!

The MGM Grand, by the way, is the largest hotel in Las Vegas. It has over 5,000 rooms.

Eco vigilantes rejoice: a new hot spot in Las Vegas, the Mandalay Bay roof

July 4, 2013 by Beth Ellyn Rosenthal Leave a Comment

Well, kids, the powers that be in Las Vegas have finally figured out that this is a desert and it’s hot. (It’s 117 as I write.) MGM Resorts International is outfitting the 20 acres of its Convention Center roof with a solar array. When it’s complete, those panels should generate 6.2 megawatts  a day. It will be one of the largest continuous rooftop photovoltaic arrays on the planet.

The project will use 20,000 solar panels to supply as much as 70 percent of the electricity the Convention Center uses on a hot July day.

MGM is partnering with NRG, a renewable energy company that is already building a 377 megawatt solar power plant in California on the state borderline with Primm. NRG will build and own the solar array and Mandalay Bay will buy power from it.

A new hot spot in Vegas. No need for bottle service! Seriously, an investment in alternative energy is a great addition to our community.
